If (and unlikely in this case) the installation is a retail version then you download a retail version of the ISO; burn to a cd/dvd and boot up with that - using 'your' key for the installation. If 'your' key doesn't have OEM included within it, then it's a fair be that yoi=u have a retail installation; but that is highly unlikely.

Again go for the sp-3 version.
The ISO can be download - for free - at the site posted by riider (#9) in this CN post:
What I'm not sure about is whether or not the versions of XP offered there are retail or OEM. Usually you cannot use an OEM key with a retail disk and visa versa...
But first have a browse at these two (hp) links; the second discusses which key to press for a recovery partition approach i depends on which OS version etc.you may have...; and also ordering the disk set. The first (and top of the list) may be of general interest too; and includes the actual hp link to the second site I've posted below.

Hmmm... I don't think so
Isn't his license key attached to his computer somewhere? There should be a sticker.
Yes it is
Yes.. The key is attached to computer on a sticker. The issue is coming up with an OEM version of the install media.
Unless I am wrong
It doesn't matter what media you install from as long as you use the correct license key you should be good.
What will happen is this....
If the OEM version you install isn't the OEM version that corresponds to the license key, you will have to call MS and they will walk you through an activation manually.
That is if the version is the same (XP Home), but the OEMs are different (Dell versus HP, versus home build etc).

Depending on how much DATA he has ...
You could insert this HDD into another computer and save his data.
Then put the HDD back and invoke the Restore Partition, then transfer his data back using a thumb drive.
One thing that confuses me slightly though:
How does your friend know that it was a virus that 'toasted his boot files' if he cannot boot to the point of using a virus checker?
See how this goes
Insert your XP CD and when you see ?Press any key to boot from CD? press a key. Now wait for the XP installer to finish loading up and you will be presented with the option to press R to Repair.
Press R.
The next screen will ask you which Windows? installation you would like to log on to. Normally the following will be listed:
1: C:WINDOWS
Press 1, then Enter to continue.
You may now be asked for the Administrator password. If you know this type it and press Enter. If you don't know the Administrators password it may be blank. Just press Enter or type your username and password.
At the command prompt type:
fixmbr and press Enter
fixboot and press Enter
Wait until you are returned to the Recovery Console.
Type bootcfg /rebuild
Once you are back to the Recovery Console remove the XP CD and restart the System in Safe Mode. If it works run the antivirus software.

Use any XP Repair console
I am pretty sure that you can use any version of OEM, Retail, or Volume License to do repair.
The difference in distribution is almost exclusively the allowed Key range based on the setup text file and not the installed OS software.

You shouldn't have no problems if you 'just run the repair option from the instalation cd'. Becaeuse but you are doing is reinstalling OS drivers and registry keys, not the whole package. Best of luck.
